Seeing Through the Wall: Meeting Ourselves in Palestine and Israel

Join us for a screening of Seeing Through the Wall: Meeting Ourselves in Palestine and Israel (2017, 58 min.), followed by an open-hearted, thoughtful dialogue about the film, our responses to it, and our hopes for Israel and Palestine. Filmmaker Anne Macksoud and Rabbi Dov Taylor, the rabbi who led the trip chronicled in the film, will be in attendance to speak about the film and answer our questions afterwards. A trailer for the film can be viewed below.

About the post-film dialogue: We are all learners, and all perspectives are welcome. Our dialogue will be guided by Encounter’s approach to communicating in conflict. (We’ll share those one-page dialogue guidelines at the beginning of each facilitated conversation.)

Anne Macksoud spent 17 years as a teacher (English literature, photography, and music) before transitioning to film and video production. Once she discovered the “eye-opening” power of the documentary medium, she brought rented documentaries into her classroom on a regular basis. Eventually, she began helping her students make their own films and slide shows on the issues of the day (civil rights, the Vietnam War, and global poverty, to name a few). Anne approaches filmmaking from the perspective of an artist as well as an educator. In 1987, Anne and her partner, John Ankele, formed Old Dog Documentaries, a film and video production company dedicated to raising awareness about social, economic, and environmental justice.

Ordained at the Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City, Dov Taylor has served congregations in Concord, New Hampshire, Boston, and Chicago, and is now rabbi of Chavurat Ki-tov: A Gathering for Jewish Life and Learning in Woodstock, VT. He has taught at Brandeis University and the Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and was a Visiting Scholar at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and the Daniel Jeremy Silver Fellow at the Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University. His translations of the first Hebrew novel and its sequel will be published this year by the Hebrew Union College Press. In his teaching and preaching, Rabbi Taylor has been an outspoken advocate of reconciliation and peace based on justice between Israel and Palestine.
