SUMMARY:Making Art About Torah | Session 2
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Rachel and members of the CBI community as we creatively “respond” to Torah through art! The Jewish Studio Project’s four step process of inquiry\, intention\, creative exploration\, and reflection is based in the idea that anyone can make art as a way of engaging with Torah\, and that when we do\, our understanding of Torah (and also of ourselves) can deepen. We will gather\, read part of a Torah portion together in English (and those who want can also delve into the Hebrew)\, and then go through the Jewish Studio Project’s four step process for making collage art in relationship with the Torah portion. Tea and light refreshments will be provided. \nOur first two sessions will be held on February 23 & March 23 from 2pm–4pm. All are welcome to attend one or both of these sessions — they are designed to be accessible for anyone at any level of experience. You do not need to be fluent in Hebrew\, a Torah scholar\, or an “artist” in order to participate! Additional sessions will continue into the early summer — please click here for a list of all future dates. \nIf you have materials that would be helpful for collage art (old magazines or books that you don’t mind having cut up / torn\, stacks of construction paper or tissue paper\, stickers / decorative tape\, etc)\, please contact the office to arrange for a time to drop them off in advance or bring them with you to the session(s) you plan to attend.

Starting at 10am\, she will hand things over to visiting Rabbi David Markus who will lead Torah study until noon for CBI and for members of Congregation Shir Ami\, his congregation in Connecticut. (We’ll use the sound system and microphones so that folks on the room and on Zoom can hear each other and can participate together.) We’ll close with mourner’s kaddish and a closing song or two.

DESCRIPTION:Drawing Through Conflict: An Autobiographical Comics Workshop\nwith Anna Moriarty Lev & Kaye Shaddock \nSo many things contribute to who we are today – our perspectives are shaped by experiences\, other people\, where we come from\, what we read and watch. When we tell our own stories and listen to others’ we open the door to seeing things from a new point of view\, and possibly understanding each other and ourselves more deeply. In this workshop we will draw from our personal experiences and memories around Palestine and Israel\, our identity as Jews in the Diaspora\, and other feelings/thoughts that come up using timed prompts to create comics. We will draw and write and share in an open\, safe\, and welcoming environment. No previous art experience necessary. We will provide materials\, but if you prefer to bring your own you are welcome to. \n\nAnna Moriarty Lev is a local artist and mom living in Williamstown. She makes comics\, paintings\, and clothes\, and has been teaching autobio comics workshops with Kaye for seven years. While Anna has lived in many places\, she has family roots here in North Adams – her dad was Bar Mitzvah’ed here in 1964! \nKaye Shaddock is an art therapist living and working in the Berkshires. Kaye has a private practice in Williamstown where she specializes in processing and healing from relational trauma through a variety of creative processes. In addition to her private practice\, Kaye works at Bennington Project Independence where she facilitates art therapy groups two days a week. Her children are her greatest teachers.

DESCRIPTION:Due to the impending snowstorm\, our Tu BiShvat Concert has been POSTPONED once more. Our concert will now be held on Sunday\, February 23 at 4:30pm. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused — thank you for understanding! \nCome celebrate the natural world with a musical journey through the four seasons\, following the progression of the Tu BiShvat seder from winter to spring to summer to fall. The CBI choir and instrumentalists will perform music spanning from the medieval period to the 21st century\, expressing the beauty of nature and the human emotions that we experience during each season. Composers who will be featured include Clément Janequin\, Antonio Vivaldi\, Paul Hindemith\, Samuel Barber\, and Naomi Shemer. Light refreshments featuring some of the symbolic fruit and nuts one eats during Tu BiShvat will follow the concert’s conclusion.

This year we’re celebrating indoors (no bonfire) due to regional wildfire risk\, but we’ll have just as much joy and music as in years past. Activities will include a crafts station (make a gift for a friend\, or sit down with a family member to make a Chanukah craft project to display every year)\, a spirited song circle\, a dreidel spinning contest\, and a recipe swap for latkes / sufganiyot / other festive treats. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a seven-week (and eight-class) journey of preparation for the Days of Awe\, co-taught on Zoom by Rabbi Rachel Barenblat with Rabbi David Evan Markus of Congregation Shir Ami. On seven Tuesday nights from just after Tisha B’Av (August 12) until just before Rosh Hashanah (October 2)\, we’ll meet to discuss Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’s On Repentance and Repair\, now available in paperback. The reading will also be keyed to the inner journey through seven core qualities we seek to strengthen as we prepare for the new year. We’ll study Rambam’s writings on teshuvah (c. 1176) alongside R. Danya’s book as we each undertake our own journey of repentance and return. \nThe final class will be held in-person only at CBI on Saturday\, October 12 (Yom Kippur) at 3pm — all are welcome to attend\, even if you didn’t attend any of the previous sessions.
