SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our May meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Monday\, May 6 at 7:30pm (EDT) to discuss The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride (2023\, Penguin Random House). \nMcBride’s novel is set in Pottstown\, PA in 1972\, at a time when the Black and immigrant Jewish residents living in a dilapidated neighborhood came together to rescue a Black boy from being institutionalized. In so doing\, they successfully resist efforts made by the communities’ white and wealthier Christian residents to engage in this and other bigoted acts. An upbeat novel\, McBride shows “that it is love and community–heaven and earth–that ultimately sustain us.” This book appears regularly on The New York Times bestseller list\, being an immensely engaging read and a murder mystery to boot! \nThis book is available to purchase online in multiple formats. The proposed changes to the Bylaws can be viewed here. We will be holding an open meeting to discuss them on Wednesday\, May 8 at 7:30pm (EDT). This meeting will be held over Zoom to allow our congregants to fully participate from wherever they are. We look forward to your comments. \nWe will bring the revised Bylaws to the Annual Meeting for a vote\, following provisions in our Bylaws. According to our Bylaws\, only regular members are allowed to vote (not Seasonal\, Associate\, or Student members) and only Jewish members are allowed to vote on changes to the Bylaws. DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us IN-PERSON\, please click on the blue “Going” button on this page to RSVP.\n(left side on desktop; bottom on mobile) \n☆ To join us ONLINE\, please click here to register via Zoom. \n\nAt our 2023 Annual Meeting last November\, the congregation agreed to move our Annual Meeting to May in order to coincide with the start of our fiscal year on July 1. This year\, CBI’s Annual Meeting will be held in-person and over Zoom on Wednesday\, May 29 at 7:30pm (EDT). Everyone is welcome to attend\, though for security reasons\, you must RSVP in advance; those joining us online must register via Zoom in order to receive the Zoom link. \nAs always\, at the Annual Meeting we’ll offer reflections on the last six months\, celebrate our community\, and vote on the slate of Board members and officers. We will also vote on several changes to the Bylaws\, which was discussed during a special feedback session earlier this month. You can vote either in-person or via Zoom (as we have done since the pandemic). According to our Bylaws\, only regular members are allowed to vote (not Seasonal\, Associate\, or Student members)\, and only Jewish members are allowed to vote on changes to the Bylaws. Proxy voting is not allowed for non-real estate matters. \nThe agenda and supporting materials\, including an updated version of the proposed Bylaws changes\, will be made available prior to the meeting — please check the weekly announcements for more information. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Natalie Matus\, CBI President.
