SUMMARY:Lifting Higher: Ramp Up Into High Holy Days
DESCRIPTION:Starting August 7\, we’ll launch Jewish tradition’s seven-week journey up to Rosh Hashanah.  Using the Kabbalistic Tree of Life and mussar (Jewish character traits)\, we’ll use each week to connect with one of the sefirot (energy centers\, like the seven weeks of counting Omer between Passover and Shavuot\, except in reverse)\, and deepen inner practices to prepare heart\, mind and spirit for the Days of Meaning. No experience necessary: all are welcome! \nIn a first-ever partnership\, CBI members can participate in this special program offered in collaboration with two other like-hearted communities (Rabbi David Markus’ Temple Beth El of City Island) and Rabbi Brent Spodek’s Beacon Hebrew Alliance.) Rabbi David is a dynamic teacher and faculty at the Academy for Jewish Religion.  You won’t want to miss this opportunity! Later in the Jewish new year\, a class will be offered by Rabbi Rachel to members of all three shuls\, and a class will be offered by Rabbi Brent to members of all three shuls. \nSessions will be via Zoom on Sundays 7:30pm from August 7 to September 18.  Registration required by August 2\, 2022 via the Temple Beth El of City Island website.  All CBI members will pay the “member” rate (seven-session series: $72 for members\, $108 for non-members).  For need-based financial assistance\, please contact Rabbi Rachel.

SUMMARY:Shofar So Good: The Spirit and Sound of the Shofar
DESCRIPTION:Join members of Temple Beth El of City Island\, Beacon Hebrew Alliance\, and Congregation Beth Israel for four weeks of learning about the deep meanings of shofar (and how to blow one\, too!) What does Torah teach about shofar? What does Talmud tell us about how to make one? What do our mystics teach about what shofar “does\,” spiritually? What do the different sounds represent? Why is the mitzvah to “hear” the shofar rather than to sound it? And more! We’ll learn about shofar in all four worlds of action\, emotion\, thought\, and spirit. There will also be opportunities to practice blowing shofar in-person at each congregation. \n$36 for members of TBE\, CBI\, and BHA; $54 for non-members. If you want to take part and the cost is prohibitive\, let the rabbi know. If you do not have your own shofar\, you may borrow one from the synagogue (while supplies last.) \nRegister at the TBE website\, yourshulbythesea.org. Meets on Zoom at 7:30pm on Aug. 23 and 30\, Sept. 6 and 13.

SUMMARY:Shabbat Morning Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a music-filled multi-access Shabbat morning service led by CBI member and cantorial soloist Ziva Larson at 9:30am on Saturday\, August 27.  In addition to singing prayers together — with some familiar melodies and some new ones — and hearing verses of Torah\, there will be a short Hallel (songs of praise) and a blessing for the new month as we enter Elul\, the month preceding the High Holy Days.  All are welcome to join us onsite\, but you must RSVP via our website if you plan on attending.  Singing will be permitted\, so please bring a mask to wear during the service.  (Please note that we will not be holding a kiddush / oneg at this time.)  The service will still be available online for those who wish to participate on Zoom.  Those joining virtually are invited to get a digital copy of the siddur\, available as a free flipbook at the publisher’s website or as a Kindle download for your Kindle\, phone\, tablet\, or computer.

6 and 13.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:After a summer break\, the CBI Book Club will be meeting again via Zoom on September 22 from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. For the September meeting\, we will discuss The Book of Separation: A Memoir by Tova Mirvis\, described by the The New York Times as “an intimate tale of departure” that “movingly conveys the heartache that accompanies the abandonment of one life in search of another.” \nAn accomplished novelist\, Mirvis compellingly charts in this memoir her “separation” from the Orthodox Jewish culture that she grew up and married within. Tova is 40 years old and raising (along with her former husband) three children when the book begins. “Beautifully written and fiercely honest\,” Tova Mirvis’s memoir illuminates “the too often dormant power within all of us to live in accordance with who we truly are.” Her memoir begins on the High Holidays\, making our September meeting an apt time for our discussion of her book. We hope you’ll join us. \nThis book is available for a reduced price at BookOutlet.com. \nPlease RSVP online via our calendar or directly to Suzanne Levy Graver via email at sgraver@williams.edu.

Please join us on Zoom ten minutes before services are scheduled to begin. You do not need a printed book — words will be shown onscreen. \n\nIf you are joining us on Zoom on Rosh Hashanah eve\, these are the ideal items to have on hand: \n\nWine or juice (for four cups or sips)\nHoliday candles\nBitter / sour / sharp food (e.g. maror\, vinegar\, a piece of onion)\nDates (or another sweet tree fruit)\nPomegranate or pomegranate juice\nApples and honey\nA challah\, roll\, or cracker (ideally round)\n\nAnd if there are items on this list that you can’t find or don’t have\, don’t worry about it: we will make it work with whatever we’ve got!
