SUMMARY:Meaning & Mishnah
DESCRIPTION:The Mishnah is a 2nd century text that acts as the rabbinic “Reddit room\,” where rabbis spoke\, argued\, told stories\, made bold claims\, and remembered what had come before. Mishnah Brachot asks questions of how prayer functions as a spiritual technology for connecting to ourselves\, our community\, and the Divine. Join us as we delve into this rich\, bizarre\, and gorgeous text alongside Hasidic commentaries\, contemporary poetry and reflections\, and — most importantly — our own insights from our lived experiences! No previous text study\, Hebrew\, or prayer experience necessary — just open minds and hearts. \nDuring this first course\, we aim to learn the first half of Mishnah Brakhot through studying the text itself\, creative translations\, commentaries\, poetry\, and more. A second course is planned for later in 5784\, and in the second course we aim to learn the second half of Mishnah Brakhot. \nRegistration for the full five-session course is $36 for CBI members and $50 for non-members. Registration for individual sessions are $10 each. Scholarships are available — please contact Rabbi Rachel Barenblat at rabbi@cbiberkshires.com for more information. Register online at bit.ly/CBI-Mishnah-5784. \n\nEmily Rogal is a former midwestern emo kid turned aspiring healer and educator. She graduated from The New School in 2017 with a degree in Religious Studies\, where she focused on the mikveh as a site of contemporary feminist ritual intervention and care\, before pursuing a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. She has experience working in the music industry\, hospital chaplaincy\, domestic violence and sexual assault counseling\, and is a trained birth and postpartum doula\, mikveh guide\, and a Jewish educator invested in cultivating spaces which center reflection\, resilience\, joy\, justice\, and just the right amount of angst. She spends the majority of her free time drinking oat milk lattes\, hunting down weird midrashim (which is basically rabbi fanfiction in her book)\, reading and writing fantasy\, and finding her perpetually lost water bottle.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Shabbat Shuvah & Kabbalat Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah — “The Shabbat of Return.” The high holiday season can feel full of words and liturgy. This Shabbat aims to balance that with holy quiet. This year we’ll return to our deepest selves with a gentle contemplative service featuring minimal liturgy\, ample time to let our melodies soak in\, and periods of holy silence to “seal” each chant. Mourner’s Kaddish will be recited in full. \nThose who wish to attend onsite must RSVP via our website. For those who wish to join us online\, we will provide a meaningful and robust experience via Zoom for digital participants. You do not need a printed book — words will be shown onscreen.

SUMMARY:Our Democracy: If We Can Keep It with Ruth Messinger
DESCRIPTION:Through a collaboration of congregations and institutions throughout Berkshire County\, Ruth Messinger will serve as scholar-in-residence on the weekend of August 18-20\, speaking in Great Barrington on Friday evening\, in Pittsfield on Saturday morning\, and in North Adams on Sunday morning. On Sunday morning at 11:30am\, Messinger will conclude her weekend residency at Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams\, speaking on the topic of “Our Democracy: If We Can Keep It.” \nWe are not living in “usual times.” Various rights we had taken for granted are currently threatened and challenged at all levels of government. Protections for voters are being dismantled every day\, and the protections that were in place for women\, people of color\, LGBTQ individuals\, and immigrants are under fierce attack in many states. Faith-based and race-based groups are often at the forefront of advocating for those under attack — organizing demonstrations\, lobbying elected officials\, and providing direct service. What should our role be\, what are our obligations to our country\, and how can we carry them out? \nPlan to join us early at 10:30am as we walk the labyrinth and apply that journey to “walking the talk.” Refreshments will be served following Ruth’s talk. Please register via our website if you plan to attend; this program will be held onsite only. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Congregation Beth Israel\, First Congregational Church of Williamstown\, Williams College Jewish Association\, and the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nA trained social worker\, Ruth Messinger began her social justice career as a community organizer in rural Western Oklahoma and then in New York City on Manhattan’s West Side. She ran and won a seat on her local school board and then served in NYC government for two decades\, first as a Council Member and later as Manhattan Borough President. She was the first woman nominated by the Democratic Party in NY to run for Mayor\, losing to Rudy Giuliani in 1997. Messinger became the CEO of American Jewish World Service\, a faith-rooted organization that supports local efforts to end poverty and expand human rights\, funding more than 400 grassroots projects in 18 countries in the Global South and advocating on their behalf in the US. She stepped down from that position in 2016 but remains AJWS’s Global Ambassador\, in addition to consulting\, teaching and facilitating on social justice matters for several different faith-based and secular organizations.
