SUMMARY:Making Art About Torah | Session 1
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Rachel and members of the CBI community as we creatively “respond” to Torah through art! The Jewish Studio Project’s four step process of inquiry\, intention\, creative exploration\, and reflection is based in the idea that anyone can make art as a way of engaging with Torah\, and that when we do\, our understanding of Torah (and also of ourselves) can deepen. We will gather\, read part of a Torah portion together in English (and those who want can also delve into the Hebrew)\, and then go through the Jewish Studio Project’s four step process for making collage art in relationship with the Torah portion. Tea and light refreshments will be provided. \nOur first two sessions will be held on February 23 & March 23 from 2pm–4pm. All are welcome to attend one or both of these sessions — they are designed to be accessible for anyone at any level of experience. You do not need to be fluent in Hebrew\, a Torah scholar\, or an “artist” in order to participate! After we have received feedback from our participants\, more sessions may be added to this series later this year. \nIf you have materials that would be helpful for collage art (old magazines or books that you don’t mind having cut up / torn\, stacks of construction paper or tissue paper\, stickers / decorative tape\, etc)\, please contact the office to arrange for a time to drop them off in advance or bring them with you to the session(s) you plan to attend.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this has caused — thank you for understanding! \nCome celebrate the natural world with a musical journey through the four seasons\, following the progression of the Tu BiShvat seder from winter to spring to summer to fall. The CBI choir and instrumentalists will perform music spanning from the medieval period to the 21st century\, expressing the beauty of nature and the human emotions that we experience during each season. Composers who will be featured include Clément Janequin\, Antonio Vivaldi\, Paul Hindemith\, Samuel Barber\, and Naomi Shemer. Light refreshments featuring some of the symbolic fruit and nuts one eats during Tu BiShvat will follow the concert’s conclusion.

DESCRIPTION:Drawing Through Conflict: An Autobiographical Comics Workshop\nwith Anna Moriarty Lev & Kaye Shaddock \nSo many things contribute to who we are today – our perspectives are shaped by experiences\, other people\, where we come from\, what we read and watch. When we tell our own stories and listen to others’ we open the door to seeing things from a new point of view\, and possibly understanding each other and ourselves more deeply. In this workshop we will draw from our personal experiences and memories around Palestine and Israel\, our identity as Jews in the Diaspora\, and other feelings/thoughts that come up using timed prompts to create comics. We will draw and write and share in an open\, safe\, and welcoming environment. No previous art experience necessary. We will provide materials\, but if you prefer to bring your own you are welcome to. \n\nAnna Moriarty Lev is a local artist and mom living in Williamstown. She makes comics\, paintings\, and clothes\, and has been teaching autobio comics workshops with Kaye for seven years. While Anna has lived in many places\, she has family roots here in North Adams – her dad was Bar Mitzvah’ed here in 1964! \nKaye Shaddock is an art therapist living and working in the Berkshires. Kaye has a private practice in Williamstown where she specializes in processing and healing from relational trauma through a variety of creative processes. In addition to her private practice\, Kaye works at Bennington Project Independence where she facilitates art therapy groups two days a week. Her children are her greatest teachers.

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, March 20 at 7:30pm (EDT) to discuss The Postcard by Anne Berest (2021; translated to English by Tina Kover in 2023). \nIn this autobiographical novel\, an unsigned postcard bearing the names of ancestors murdered in the Holocaust\, arrives in January 2003 in the mail\, puzzling everyone in the family. Anne\, a member of that family and the narrator of this book\, engages in a quest to discover who sent the postcard and why? A search for her own Jewish identity\, from which she’s been alienated\, drives in large part Anne’s quest. A “powerful\, meticulously imagined book” that “contains a single grand-scale act of self-discovery and many moments of historical illuminations” is how the New York Times described it. \nAll are welcome! To ease the challenge of reading this novel\, a family tree can be found here for attendees to reference as they read and discuss The Postcard with us. DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbi Rachel and members of the CBI community as we creatively “respond” to Torah through art! The Jewish Studio Project’s four step process of inquiry\, intention\, creative exploration\, and reflection is based in the idea that anyone can make art as a way of engaging with Torah\, and that when we do\, our understanding of Torah (and also of ourselves) can deepen. We will gather\, read part of a Torah portion together in English (and those who want can also delve into the Hebrew)\, and then go through the Jewish Studio Project’s four step process for making collage art in relationship with the Torah portion. Tea and light refreshments will be provided. \nOur first two sessions will be held on February 23 & March 23 from 2pm–4pm. All are welcome to attend one or both of these sessions — they are designed to be accessible for anyone at any level of experience. You do not need to be fluent in Hebrew\, a Torah scholar\, or an “artist” in order to participate! Ari Lev Fornari of Kol Tzedek in Philadelphia about his journey and the Torah texts that underpin this work. \nR. Join us in-person for learning and conversation. \n\nRabbi Ari Lev Fornari (he/they) is a White\, queer\, trans person of Ashkenazi and Italian descent. Before serving Kol Tzedek as their rabbi he worked as a Jewish educator\, Hebrew School director\, and prison chaplain. Rabbi Ari Lev loves to cook\, bike\, meditate\, tend his house plants\, and parent his two little ones. He is deeply committed to the creation and embodiment of Torat Hayyim\, a living tradition. This requires that our lives be deeply informed by ancient wisdom and practices\, and that Jewish traditions learn and grow from our insights and lived experiences.
