SUMMARY:Tisha b'Av 5783
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of poetry\, music\, and prayer designed to open our hearts as we begin the seven-week journey toward Rosh Hashanah. Led by Rabbi Rachel and our CBI choir\, we’ll face the world’s brokenness and find the seeds of hope to help us build toward repair. Tisha b’Av commemorates the fall of both Temples as well as many other communal tragedies throughout our history. It is also the beginning of the runway toward the Days of Awe. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Summer Hike: The Shepherd’s Well Trail down from Petersburg Pass
DESCRIPTION:CBI members Robin Brickman and Jeff Strait will share one of their favorite hikes in Williamstown. Except for a brief steep uphill beginning\, this 2 mile hike is one-way downhill and offers some spectacular scenery. Taking a leisurely pace and leaving time to admire the views we will walk for 1.5 to 2 hours. This hike is suitable for both experienced and inexperienced hikers who are confident walkers. Near the bottom there is a beautiful open field with a picnic table. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a sandwich for lunch. \nWe will meet at the large parking lot at Petersburg Pass on Route 2 just across the New York State border at 10am to give us time to shuttle cars between the top and bottom\, enjoy our hike\, and get to our picnic spot shortly before noon. \nPlease RSVP to jeffstrait53@gmail.com by Saturday\, August 5 so that we can send you necessary details and answer any questions.

SUMMARY:Making Our Transitions Holy: Havdalah & Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Join Rabbis Pamela Wax and Rachel Barenblat for an evening of poetry\, havdalah\, and book-signing at 8pm on Saturday\, August 12 at Congregation Beth Israel of the Berkshires. Weather permitting\, we’ll meet on the patio outside Congregation Beth Israel\, beside the Al and Frances Small Meditation Labyrinth. The two poets will share their award-winning work\, touching on life and death\, loss and memory\, and the poignancy of havdalah itself. This last hour of Shabbat is known in Jewish tradition as a time when our yearnings for a redeemed world reach their peak. Following the reading and a musical havdalah\, both authors will be available to sign books. \n\nAbout the Authors \nRabbi Barenblat’s books include Crossing the Sea (Phoenicia Publishing)\, Texts to the Holy (Ben Yehuda)\, and 70 faces: Torah poems (Phoenicia). She is also editor of Beside Still Waters\, a volume for the mourner’s path (Ben Yehuda Press and Bayit) and From Narrow Places\, a collection of liturgy\, poetry\, and art from the first years of the pandemic. Known online as “the Velveteen Rabbi\,” after her popular blog of the last 20 years\, she is a co-founder at Jewish spiritual incubator Bayit: Building Jewish. She teaches at the intersection of writing and spiritual life for the pluralist Academy for Jewish Religion and for the Methodist church’s Academy for Spiritual Formation. Since 2011 she has served as spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Israel of the Berkshires. She lives in Williamstown with her son. \nRabbi Pamela Wax is the author of Walking the Labyrinth (Main Street Rag\, 2022) and the forthcoming chapbook\, Starter Mothers (Finishing Line Press\, August 2023). Her poems have received a Best of the Net nomination and awards from Crosswinds\, Paterson Literary Review\, Poets’ Billow\, Oberon\, and the Robinson Jeffers Tor House and have been published in many literary journals. Her essays on Judaism\, spirituality\, and women’s issues have also been published broadly. After running a Jewish spiritual healing center for nineteen years and serving as interim director of adult education at Knesset Israel\, Rabbi Wax currently facilitates on-line spirituality workshops\, including poetry writing\, and travels to synagogues around the country as scholar or artist-in-residence. She walks labyrinths in North Adams\, Massachusetts\, or wherever she can find them.

SUMMARY:Our Democracy: If We Can Keep It with Ruth Messinger
DESCRIPTION:Through a collaboration of congregations and institutions throughout Berkshire County\, Ruth Messinger will serve as scholar-in-residence on the weekend of August 18-20\, speaking in Great Barrington on Friday evening\, in Pittsfield on Saturday morning\, and in North Adams on Sunday morning. On Sunday morning at 11:30am\, Messinger will conclude her weekend residency at Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams\, speaking on the topic of “Our Democracy: If We Can Keep It.” \nWe are not living in “usual times.” Various rights we had taken for granted are currently threatened and challenged at all levels of government. Protections for voters are being dismantled every day\, and the protections that were in place for women\, people of color\, LGBTQ individuals\, and immigrants are under fierce attack in many states. Faith-based and race-based groups are often at the forefront of advocating for those under attack — organizing demonstrations\, lobbying elected officials\, and providing direct service. What should our role be\, what are our obligations to our country\, and how can we carry them out? \nPlan to join us early at 10:30am as we walk the labyrinth and apply that journey to “walking the talk.” Refreshments will be served following Ruth’s talk. Please register via our website if you plan to attend; this program will be held onsite only. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Congregation Beth Israel\, First Congregational Church of Williamstown\, Williams College Jewish Association\, and the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires. \n\nAbout the Speaker \nA trained social worker\, Ruth Messinger began her social justice career as a community organizer in rural Western Oklahoma and then in New York City on Manhattan’s West Side. She ran and won a seat on her local school board and then served in NYC government for two decades\, first as a Council Member and later as Manhattan Borough President. She was the first woman nominated by the Democratic Party in NY to run for Mayor\, losing to Rudy Giuliani in 1997. Messinger became the CEO of American Jewish World Service\, a faith-rooted organization that supports local efforts to end poverty and expand human rights\, funding more than 400 grassroots projects in 18 countries in the Global South and advocating on their behalf in the US. She stepped down from that position in 2016 but remains AJWS’s Global Ambassador\, in addition to consulting\, teaching and facilitating on social justice matters for several different faith-based and secular organizations.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Shabbat Shuvah & Kabbalat Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah — “The Shabbat of Return.” The high holiday season can feel full of words and liturgy. This Shabbat aims to balance that with holy quiet. This year we’ll return to our deepest selves with a gentle contemplative service featuring minimal liturgy\, ample time to let our melodies soak in\, and periods of holy silence to “seal” each chant. Mourner’s Kaddish will be recited in full. \nThose who wish to attend onsite must RSVP via our website.
