SUMMARY:Seventh Day of Pesach: Yizkor & Hallel
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please click here to register via Zoom. \n\nJoin us on Zoom at 10am on Monday\, April 29 for a short morning service that will include Yizkor (the memorial prayers said four times a year) and Hallel (the psalms of praise we sing at every festival). Yizkor is recited on the last day of Pesach. Following Reform custom of celebrating seven days of Passover\, the seventh day begins Sunday evening and continues through Monday. \n\nIf you want to pray the Yizkor prayers on your own at another time\, here is the core silent prayer of the Yizkor service: \n \nHere is a link to the Yizkor prayers at Sefaria\, and here is an online shiva booklet that includes words of the Mourner’s Kaddish\, El Maleh Rachamim (“God\, Full of Compassion”)\, and Psalm 23.\n\nMay the memories of our loved ones lift us up\, this Pesach and always.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our May meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Monday\, May 6 at 7:30pm (EDT) to discuss The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride (2023\, Penguin Random House). \nMcBride’s novel is set in Pottstown\, PA in 1972\, at a time when the Black and immigrant Jewish residents living in a dilapidated neighborhood came together to rescue a Black boy from being institutionalized. In so doing\, they successfully resist efforts made by the communities’ white and wealthier Christian residents to engage in this and other bigoted acts. An upbeat novel\, McBride shows “that it is love and community–heaven and earth–that ultimately sustain us.” This book appears regularly on The New York Times bestseller list\, being an immensely engaging read and a murder mystery to boot! \nThis book is available to purchase online in multiple formats. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP via our website. If you have any questions\, please email Suzanne Levy Graver at sgraver@williams.edu.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our June meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Monday\, June 3 at 7:30pm (EDT) to discuss Apeirogon by Colum McCann (Penguin Random House\, 2020; translated into Hebrew in 2022). \nA daring\, symphonic\, and challenging novel\, named for a shape with a countably infinite number of sides\, it features two real-life characters: one Israeli and the other Palestinian\, each of whom have daughters killed by ‘other’ side\, one a 10-year-old Palestinian girl shot by a young IDF soldier\, the other a 14-year-old Israeli girl murdered by Hamas suicide bombers. Part fiction\, part autobiography\, the story of how these two men come to meet\, become founders of “Combatants for Peace\,” and life-long friends is conveyed by McCann in a Thousand and One Cantos\, modelled so to speak on The Arabian Nights. (The two men dedicate themselves to keeping their daughters alive by endlessly telling their stories\, which they are in fact currently doing worldwide). \nMcCann quasi-fictional format initially makes for challenging reading\, mirroring for the first 60 or so pages the confusion the characters themselves experience\, but the pace quickens considerably halfway through\, so take notes as you read and allow yourself ample time. Given this format\, an actual paper copy of the book will make for an easier read than an online copy. Live interviews with McCann and the two men are available on YouTube and very much worth viewing\, and a 2020 review from The New York Times can be read here. One further note: a Hebrew translation of Apeirogon was initially banned in Israel\, and Haaretz (Israel’s liberal newspaper) published an article earlier this year urging people to read it now that it’s finally out! \nThis book is available to purchase online in multiple formats. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP via our website. If you have any questions\, please email Suzanne Levy Graver at sgraver@williams.edu.

SUMMARY:This\, Too\, Is Torah – A Shavuot Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a concert of great Jewish music from throughout the ages! At Shavuot we celebrate the revelation of Torah in all of its forms\, and we gather to offer up the “first fruits” of the spring harvest. We’ll hear great music\, both Sefardic and Ashkenazi\, that spans different eras of Jewish history\, including compositions by Flory Jagoda\, Salomone Rossi\, Naomi Shemer\, Salomon Sulzer\, Debbie Friedman\, Louis Lewandowski\, and more. Under the direction of Adam Green\, the Congregation Beth Israel choir and musicians will offer up a spring harvest of spirit and harmony. \nThe concert will be followed by a celebratory potluck. Following Ashkenazi Shavuot custom\, this meal is designated as a dairy meal (that means no meat; items may be dairy\, vegetarian\, vegan\, or pescatarian). If you can join us for that\, please let us know what you can bring to share by signing up here via Google Docs.

SUMMARY:Israel-Palestine Film Series – 5 Broken Cameras
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of 5 Broken Cameras (2011\, 94 min.)\, followed by an open-hearted\, thoughtful dialogue about the film\, our responses to it\, and our hopes for Israel and Palestine. A trailer for the film can be viewed below. \nAbout the film: 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal first-hand account of life and nonviolent resistance in Bil’in\, a West Bank village where Israel is building a security fence. Palestinian Emad Burnat\, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son\, shot the film and Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi co-directed. The filmmakers follow one family’s evolution over five years\, witnessing a child’s growth from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him. The film is a Palestinian-Israeli-French co-production. \nAbout the post-film dialogue: We are all learners\, and all perspectives are welcome. Our dialogue will be guided by Encounter’s approach to communicating in conflict. (We’ll share those one-page dialogue guidelines at the beginning of each facilitated conversation.)

SUMMARY:The Journey of Teshuvah & Runway to the High Holy Days
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a seven-week (and eight-class) journey of preparation for the Days of Awe\, co-taught on Zoom by Rabbi Rachel Barenblat with Rabbi David Evan Markus of Congregation Shir Ami. On seven Tuesday nights from just after Tisha B’Av (August 12) until just before Rosh Hashanah (October 2)\, we’ll meet to discuss Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg’s On Repentance and Repair\, now available in paperback. The reading will also be keyed to the inner journey through seven core qualities we seek to strengthen as we prepare for the new year. We’ll study Rambam’s writings on teshuvah (c. 1176) alongside R. Danya’s book as we each undertake our own journey of repentance and return. \n☆ This course is free for members and $120 for non-members; to register\, please click here. Classes will meet weekly on Tuesdays over Zoom at 7pm (EDT) from August 13 through September 24. The final class will be held in-person only at CBI on Saturday\, October 12 (Yom Kippur) at 3pm — all are welcome to attend\, even if you didn’t attend any of the previous sessions. If you have any questions\, please contact Rabbi Rachel.
