SUMMARY:Spiritual Writing: Midrash and Making Meaning
DESCRIPTION:Midrash are interpretive stories that explore the blank spaces in Torah\, often offering answers to questions of meaning\, character\, and inner life. We’ll read some classical midrash and explore what driving questions fueled the sages. Then with guided writing exercises\, creative prompts\, and gentle feedback\, we’ll also write and share our own midrashic responses to the Torah stories at hand. \nThis adult education class taught by Rabbi Rachel Barenblat will meet on Zoom on Sundays (January 29 at 4pm + February 5\, February 12\, February 26\, March 5\, & March 12 at 2pm). \nTuition is $72 for members of Congregation Beth Israel & Temple Beth El of City Island\, and $108 for non-members. Registration is available via Google Forms at https://bit.ly/Spiritual-Writing-5783.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our March meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Wednesday\, March 22 at 7:30pm to discuss Michael Frank’s One Hundred Saturdays: Stella Levi and the Search for a Lost World (2022). \nOne of The Wall Street Journal‘s Ten Best Books of the Year\, One Hundred Saturdays tells the remarkable story of ninety-nine year old Stella Levi\, whose conversations with the writer Michael Frank over the course of six years bring to life the vibrant world of Jewish Rhodes\, the deportation to Auschwitz that extinguished ninety percent of her community\, and the resilience and wisdom of the woman who lived to tell the tale. Probing and courageous\, candid and sly\, Stella is a magical modern-day Scheherazade whose stories reveal what it was like to grow up in an extraordinary place in an extraordinary time — and to construct a life after that place has vanished. One Hundred Saturdays is a portrait of one of the last survivors drawn at nearly the last possible moment\, as well as an account of a tender and transformative friendship between storyteller and listener\, offering a powerful reminder that the ability to listen thoughtfully is a rare and significant gift. \nThis book is available to purchase on Amazon in multiple formats. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP by email to Suzanne Levy Graver at sgraver@williams.edu.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our April meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, April 27 at 7:30pm (EDT) to discuss David Grossman’s magnificent new novel\, More Than I Love My Life. \nAs many of you may know\, Grossman is Israel’s most prominent fiction writer and this book is currently long-listed for the International Booker Prize. A beautiful book\, “it is a love story about a family and their myriad individual tragedies. But it is also about the way the personal can never be wholly separated from the political” (The London Observer). To help us navigate Grossman’s new book\, please refer to the family tree below. \nThis book\, translated by Jessica Cohen\, is available to purchase online; a print copy is suggested in lieu of a digital version. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP by email to Suzanne Levy Graver at sgraver@williams.edu.

SUMMARY:First Friday Shabbat Zoom Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Friday\, May 5 for our First Friday Shabbat Zoom where special guest Dr. Len Radin will present “Finding Gems in the Garbage.” Did you know that one of the ancient Greek Tragedies was written by a nice Jewish boy? He wrote a Jewish story that is filled with the same love and war\, freedom and enslavement\, heartbreak and glory\, and violence and tenderness that one would find in any great Greek Tragedy. Come to our Zoom Shabbat to learn about the oldest Jewish play in existence and the fascinating story of how it survived\, almost unknown\, for 22 centuries. \nDr. Len Radin has been a CBI member for 50 years. He has been in theatre almost his entire life and taught theatre for 25 years as a volunteer director and teacher at Drury High School. He was inducted into the Educational Theatre Association’s Hall of Fame in Washington D.C. in 2000 for his innovative work in teaching theatre and was awarded a Point of Light Award by the governor of Massachusetts. \nAs always\, we will gather together around the Zoom table to celebrate the Jewish traditions of Shabbat\, light the candles\, and bless the wine and challah.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Shabbat Shuvah & Kabbalat Shabbat Service
DESCRIPTION:The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah — “The Shabbat of Return.” The high holiday season can feel full of words and liturgy. This Shabbat aims to balance that with holy quiet. This year we’ll return to our deepest selves with a gentle contemplative service featuring minimal liturgy\, ample time to let our melodies soak in\, and periods of holy silence to “seal” each chant. Mourner’s Kaddish will be recited in full. \nThose who wish to attend onsite must RSVP via our website. For those who wish to join us online\, we will provide a meaningful and robust experience via Zoom for digital participants. You do not need a printed book — words will be shown onscreen.

SUMMARY:Meaning & Mishnah
DESCRIPTION:The Mishnah is a 2nd century text that acts as the rabbinic “Reddit room\,” where rabbis spoke\, argued\, told stories\, made bold claims\, and remembered what had come before. Mishnah Brachot asks questions of how prayer functions as a spiritual technology for connecting to ourselves\, our community\, and the Divine. Join us as we delve into this rich\, bizarre\, and gorgeous text alongside Hasidic commentaries\, contemporary poetry and reflections\, and — most importantly — our own insights from our lived experiences! No previous text study\, Hebrew\, or prayer experience necessary — just open minds and hearts. \nDuring this first course\, we aim to learn the first half of Mishnah Brakhot through studying the text itself\, creative translations\, commentaries\, poetry\, and more. A second course is planned for later in 5784\, and in the second course we aim to learn the second half of Mishnah Brakhot. \nRegistration for the full five-session course is $36 for CBI members and $50 for non-members. Registration for individual sessions are $10 each. Scholarships are available — please contact Rabbi Rachel Barenblat at rabbi@cbiberkshires.com for more information. Register online at bit.ly/CBI-Mishnah-5784. \n\nEmily Rogal is a former midwestern emo kid turned aspiring healer and educator. She graduated from The New School in 2017 with a degree in Religious Studies\, where she focused on the mikveh as a site of contemporary feminist ritual intervention and care\, before pursuing a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. She has experience working in the music industry\, hospital chaplaincy\, domestic violence and sexual assault counseling\, and is a trained birth and postpartum doula\, mikveh guide\, and a Jewish educator invested in cultivating spaces which center reflection\, resilience\, joy\, justice\, and just the right amount of angst. She spends the majority of her free time drinking oat milk lattes\, hunting down weird midrashim (which is basically rabbi fanfiction in her book)\, reading and writing fantasy\, and finding her perpetually lost water bottle.
