SUMMARY:CBI Book Club with Author Barbara Viniar
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please CLICK HERE to register via Zoom \n\nOur next meeting of the CBI Book Club\, facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Levy Graver\, Professor Emerita at Williams College\, will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, March 19 at 7:30pm (EDT). \nJoin us for a discussion with Barbara Viniar\, Berkshire resident and author of Little Bird\, the story of a girl who finds the courage to forge her own path to womanhood. \nIn 1910\, fearing escalating violence against Jews in Russia\, Feige’s father arranges for his daughter – Barbara’s grandmother – to marry a wealthy cousin in NYC. As she adapts to life in America\, Feige goes from being an obedient daughter to a dutiful wife\, even allowing her new husband to change her name to Fannie. Longing to make her own decisions\, her husband’s cruelty finally pushes her to risk leaving him. She parlays her embroidery skills into a job and finds the man she believes is the love of her life. When he betrays her\, she refuses to forgive him\, disregarding advice to overlook men’s lapses. Finally\, she meets a man who both loves and respects her. Can she give up her hard-won independence? \nThe novel is available to purchase online in multiple formats. \nThis online event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to join the author online via Zoom.

SUMMARY:NEW DATE! | CBI Book Club with Author Elizabeth Graver
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please CLICK HERE to register via Zoom \n\nOur next meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, January 29 at 7:30pm (EST) (please note the change of date). \nElizabeth Graver’s novel Kantika (“song” in Ladino) was inspired by the life story of her maternal grandmother Rebecca Cohen\, daughter of the Sephardic elite of early twentieth-century Istanbul\, whose shapeshifting journey took her to Cuba\, Spain\, and New York. New York Times reviewer Ayten Tartici writes\, “In Graver’s vision\, migration is never simply a one-way street. Kantika is a meticulous endeavor to preserve the memories of a family\, an elegy and a celebration both.” \nCome talk about Kantika with Elizabeth and her mother\, Suzanne Levy Graver\, who leads CBI’s book club and whose childhood is part of this story. Copies of Kantika are available at the Williams College Bookstore\, as well as at Bookstore.org\, Amazon\, and in local libraries. Kantika is also available as a wonderfully narrated audiobook. To view the Book Club Kit for Kantika\, please click here. \nThis online event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to join the author online via Zoom.
