SUMMARY:Yom Kippur 5787 Break-the-Fast Meal
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the registration deadline for this event has already passed. As this is a catered event\, we will not able to accommodate late RSVPs or walk-ins at this time — thank you for understanding. \nThose who have registered in advance are welcome to join us for a Break-the Fast meal in the social hall following Ne’ilah (~7pm). \n\n☆ As we prepare for Yom Kippur\, please remember that it is forbidden to fast from food and drink on Yom Kippur if so doing would be dangerous to one’s health in any way. For expertise and wisdom on this\, see A Mitzvah to Eat\, specifically their page about Yom Kippur\, which offers resources\, information\, prayers\, and rituals for choosing to eat. As Torah teaches\, “I have put heaven and earth to witness within you this day… Choose life\, that you and your children may live.” (Deut. 30:19)

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:☆ Those who plan on joining us for this month’s Book Club gathering should RSVP via email to sgraver@williams.edu as soon as possible in order to receive more information.\n\nOur next meeting of the CBI Book Club\, facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Levy Graver\, Professor Emerita at Williams College\, will meet in-person at a private home in Williamstown to discuss Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast. \nIn her multi-award-winning first memoir\, Chast – a New Yorker cartoonist – brings her signature wit to the universal topic of aging parents while shining a light on one family’s endearing peculiarities. Spanning the last several years of their lives and told through four-color cartoons\, family photos\, documents\, and a narrative as rife with laughs as it is with tears\, Chast’s memoir is both heart-wrenching and hilarious. \nFollowing the book’s release\, Can’t We Talk about Something More Pleasant? became a #1 New York Times Bestseller and a 2014 National Book Award Finalist\, as well as the winner of the inaugural 2014 Kirkus Prize in nonfiction\, the National Book Critics Circle Award\, the 2014 Books for a Better Life Award\, and the 2015 Reuben Award from National Cartoonists Society. \nAll are welcome! This book is available to purchase online in multiple formats.

SUMMARY:NEW DATE! | CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting of the CBI Book Club\, facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Levy Graver\, Professor Emerita at Williams College\, will meet in-person to discuss This is Not About Us by Allegra Goodman. \n☆ Please note that this meeting will now be held on Tuesday\, June 9 at 2:30pm at Suzanne’s home (not at CBI) — we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this change may have caused. If you have any questions regarding this change\, please email Suzanne directly at sgraver@williams.edu. Thank you for understanding! ☆ \nGoodman’s newest novel is a kaleidoscopic portrait of a modern American family — steadfast\, complicated\, begrudging\, and loving — centering on the strained relationship between two sisters. When their beloved sister passes away\, Sylvia and Helen Rubinstein are unmoored\, with a simple misunderstanding causing a rift that spans generations. Jami Attenberg of the New York Times states that “the delicate minutiae of family life” is “played out beautifully\, boldly\, brightly…in this nimble\, heartfelt book.” \nAll are welcome! This book is available to purchase online in multiple formats; a family tree can be viewed below. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP via our website; location information will be sent to all who RSVP once the date gets closer.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club with Author Barbara Viniar
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please CLICK HERE to register via Zoom \n\nOur next meeting of the CBI Book Club\, facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Levy Graver\, Professor Emerita at Williams College\, will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, March 19 at 7:30pm (EDT). \nJoin us for a discussion with Barbara Viniar\, Berkshire resident and author of Little Bird\, the story of a girl who finds the courage to forge her own path to womanhood. \nIn 1910\, fearing escalating violence against Jews in Russia\, Feige’s father arranges for his daughter – Barbara’s grandmother – to marry a wealthy cousin in NYC. As she adapts to life in America\, Feige goes from being an obedient daughter to a dutiful wife\, even allowing her new husband to change her name to Fannie. Longing to make her own decisions\, her husband’s cruelty finally pushes her to risk leaving him. She parlays her embroidery skills into a job and finds the man she believes is the love of her life. When he betrays her\, she refuses to forgive him\, disregarding advice to overlook men’s lapses. Finally\, she meets a man who both loves and respects her. Can she give up her hard-won independence? \nThe novel is available to purchase online in multiple formats. \nThis online event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to join the author online via Zoom.

SUMMARY:Pre-Purim Discussion: Why Don’t We Talk About Chapter Nine? | Zoom Only
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please CLICK HERE to register via Zoom \n\nWhen we think of Purim we may think of Esther and Mordechai\, court intrigue\, and graggers drowning out the name of the wicked Haman. But most liberal communities (including ours) rarely read or retell the penultimate chapter of the megillah\, often described as the revenge fantasy of an oppressed people\, in which the Jews of Persia take up arms. Join Rabbi Rachel for a text study of that final chapter alongside some of our tradition’s commentaries as we delve into the deep spiritual question of what this text can teach us and how we choose to relate to it today. \n☆ This online discussion is designed for adults — all ages will be welcome at our Purimspiel & Party on Monday\, March 2.

SUMMARY:CBI Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting of the CBI Book Club\, facilitated by Dr. Suzanne Levy Graver\, Professor Emerita at Williams College\, will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, February 19 at 7:30pm (EST). \nWe will discuss The Photographer at Sixteen: The Death and Life of a Fighter by George Szirtes. \nThe Photographer at Sixteen is a poet’s memoir of his mother that flows backwards through time\, through a tumultuous period of European history – a tender and yet unsparing autobiographical journey. In July 1975\, Magda Szirtes died in the ambulance on the way to hospital after she had tried to take her own life; the memoir spools into the past\, through her exile in England\, her flight with her husband and two young boys from Hungary in 1956 and her time in two concentration camps\, her girlhood as an ambitious photographer\, and the unknowable fate of her vanished family in Transylvania. The woman who emerges – with all her contradictions – is utterly captivating. \nAll are welcome! This book is available to purchase online in multiple formats. Those who plan on joining us should RSVP via our website; Zoom information will be sent to all who RSVP once the date gets closer.

SUMMARY:NEW DATE! | CBI Book Club with Author Elizabeth Graver
DESCRIPTION:☆ To join us ONLINE\, please CLICK HERE to register via Zoom \n\nOur next meeting of the CBI Book Club will take place over Zoom on Thursday\, January 29 at 7:30pm (EST) (please note the change of date). \nElizabeth Graver’s novel Kantika (“song” in Ladino) was inspired by the life story of her maternal grandmother Rebecca Cohen\, daughter of the Sephardic elite of early twentieth-century Istanbul\, whose shapeshifting journey took her to Cuba\, Spain\, and New York. New York Times reviewer Ayten Tartici writes\, “In Graver’s vision\, migration is never simply a one-way street. Kantika is a meticulous endeavor to preserve the memories of a family\, an elegy and a celebration both.” \nCome talk about Kantika with Elizabeth and her mother\, Suzanne Levy Graver\, who leads CBI’s book club and whose childhood is part of this story. Copies of Kantika are available at the Williams College Bookstore\, as well as at Bookstore.org\, Amazon\, and in local libraries. Kantika is also available as a wonderfully narrated audiobook. To view the Book Club Kit for Kantika\, please click here. \nThis online event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to join the author online via Zoom.

In addition to RSVPing\, please visit the potluck sign-up page and let us know what you will bring — this will help us assure balance in our potluck offerings so there is something for everyone. \nOur Jewish Journeys students are currently collecting pasta donations for the Berkshire Food Project\, so please bring an unopened box of pasta with you to contribute to our cause. \nAll ages and faiths are welcome to attend this free community event! \nFunding to help support this event has been provided by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation.
